Managing Prescriptions

How to create and manage pet prescriptions in PawPlacer's Medical Suite

Use Prescriptions to track pet-specific medication plans. Prescriptions connect a pet, medication, prescribing veterinarian, dosage, schedule, dates, notes, and current status.

Accessing Prescriptions

Prescriptions can be accessed in two ways:

  1. From the Medical Suite: Navigate to Medical, then open Prescriptions
  2. From a pet profile: Open a pet, select the Medical tab, then select Rx

Viewing Prescriptions

The Prescriptions page shows a searchable table of prescription records. Each row links to the prescription profile.

The table includes:

  • Pet: Pet name, photo, species, and breed when available
  • Medication: Medication name with dosage and frequency
  • Status: Active, completed, or stopped
  • Duration: Start and end date, or ongoing when no end date is set
  • Refills: Remaining refill count when available
  • Prescribed By: Veterinarian and clinic when available

Use search, the status filter, sorting controls, the page size selector, and pagination to manage long prescription lists.

Adding a New Prescription

  1. Click Add Prescription
  2. Complete the form sections
  3. Click Save

Basic Information

  • Pet (required): Select the pet receiving the prescription
  • Medication (required): Choose from your medication database
  • Prescribed By: Select the prescribing veterinarian, or leave blank
  • Status: Active, Completed, or Stopped

Dosing Information

  • Dosage (required): Enter the amount per dose (e.g., "1 tablet", "5mg")
  • Frequency (required): How often the medication is given (e.g., "Twice daily", "Every 8 hours")
  • Administration Route: Select the route, such as oral, injection, ophthalmic, otic, topical, or subcutaneous
  • Amount: Total amount dispensed (e.g., "30 tablets", "100ml")

When you choose a medication, PawPlacer shows that medication's default dosage, available dose options, default frequency, default route, and warning information when those details exist. Selecting a medication can also prefill blank dosing fields.

Dates

  • Start Date (required): When the prescription begins
  • End Date: When the prescription ends (leave blank for ongoing)

The end date must be on or after the start date.

Additional Information

  • Notes: Additional instructions or information

Medication warnings appear in this section when the selected medication has warning text.

Managing Prescriptions from Pet Profiles

On each pet's profile page, the Medical tab includes an Rx sub-tab for that pet's prescriptions. The main All medical sub-tab also includes prescription tiles in the combined medical timeline.

Prescription Tiles

Each prescription displays as a tile showing:

  • Medication name
  • Active, Completed, Stopped, Expired, or Ending Soon status
  • Dosage, frequency, route, and amount when provided
  • Veterinarian and clinic information
  • Start and end dates
  • Today's dose status for active prescriptions with a supported frequency
  • Prescription number badge when present
  • Quick action menu for changing status

Prescription Profiles

Clicking a prescription opens its compact profile. A profile includes:

  • A header with the medication and pet name, current status, and summary metrics
  • Links to the related pet, medication, and prescriber
  • Start date, end date, and status details
  • Notes when provided
  • An activity timeline for start, end, and creation dates
  • Dose, schedule, route, and amount metric cards
  • Medication details, including type, manufacturer, prescription requirement, estimated cost, and warnings
  • Dose history for active prescriptions with a supported frequency

Prescription Status Management

Prescriptions have three status options:

  • Active: Currently being administered
  • Completed: Full course finished as prescribed
  • Stopped: Discontinued before completion

You can change status from the prescription profile by clicking the status badge, or from prescription tiles on the pet Medical tab. Active prescriptions can be marked Completed or Stopped; completed or stopped prescriptions can be reactivated.

Dose History

Active prescriptions with a start date and supported frequency can show dose history on the prescription profile. This helps staff see whether scheduled doses are due, completed, or missed.

Integration with Medical Records

Prescriptions appear in pet medical timelines and the Rx sub-tab. Exams, vaccinations, procedures, and treatments can also include medication entries, so visit history and medication history stay connected.

Best Practices for Prescription Management

  • Always select the prescribing veterinarian for accurate records
  • Set end dates for short-term medications to track completion
  • Add detailed notes for special administration instructions
  • Regularly review and update prescription statuses
  • Use the "Stopped" status if a medication is discontinued early
  • Keep medication defaults current so prescription forms fill faster
  • Review active prescriptions from pet profiles and medication profiles

Prescription History

The prescription system maintains active, completed, and stopped prescriptions. Use the status filter on the Prescriptions page to view a specific group, track medication patterns over time, and review which veterinarians prescribe which medications.

Editing and Deleting Prescriptions

To edit a prescription, open its profile and click the edit icon. To delete a prescription, open the profile actions menu and choose Delete. PawPlacer asks for confirmation before deleting the record.

Tips for Effective Use

  • Link prescriptions to medical records for complete documentation
  • Review the Rx sub-tab and daily care items for timely refills and doses
  • Use consistent naming in your medication database
  • Keep prescription statuses current for accurate tracking
  • Take advantage of the expiration alerts to plan vet visits
  • Document why prescriptions were stopped in the notes field
