Description
Tyto is ready for a new home! I saw a post about Tyto late in the evening of April 28th and knew he needed to be rescued ASAP. His finder saw him, perched on a mailbox, covered in his own blood (last photo). After getting in contact with her, we met where he was last seen and successfully caught him at 2 am in the morning. I took him straight to the Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG) since I didn't have any medical supplies at the time. They made sure he was stable and then transferred him to Appalachian Wildlife Refuge in the morning where he was found to have a laceration under his wing and missing a few tail feathers. Once he was fully healed, I took him in on May 11th as he was clearly previously owned even though he didn't have a leg band. Unfortunately, he was likely a victim of a ceremonial release, and ended up being targeted by a predator since white birds are easy to spot. Thankfully he was able to escape. He got his name (Tyto) from the scientific name of the barn owl since he was rescued in the middle of the night, and his coo sounds like the deep hoot of an owl. He would prefer to be the only male pigeon of the household as I've noticed he doesn't tolerate the other males getting in his personal space although he has been gradually getting better about it. He is very intelligent and has already learned to put himself away some nights by going into his enclosure himself.
He will do best in a home with a predator proofed aviary or as an indoor only pet with a female pigeon companion if possible. Although he's slightly nervous about humans, with a bit of time and patience, he could be a lovely companion.
If this large beautiful boy seems like a fit for you, send in an adoption application! Please reach out to me if you have questions or are interested in this majestic man (or know someone else who is!)
All my rescues are DNA sex tested, dewormed, treated for feather lice, and vaccinated for PMV prior to being posted.
