Terms

By applying for the indicated dogs, I agree to the following terms. I understand I will be required to sign a contract upon adoption which includes these same terms.

Meet and greets are only scheduled with approved adopters. A meet and greet does not guarantee adoption. This is an opportunity to see whether this particular dog is a good fit for your family and for us to make sure there are no safety concerns. Our first priority is ensuring our dogs go to loving, safe, forever homes. We are a foster based rescue and most of our fosters are located in or around Louisville. Because all of us are volunteers who just want to help dogs, adopters will need to be within a two hour radius of Louisville. There may be a rare exception for the perfect fit, but this will ultimately be up to the foster's discretion. Please understand this is not personal and we hope you will look for options local to you or who can transport! Mispits and Friends will work through applications as they come in for each dog; however, being first to apply doesn't guarantee a dog. We are dedicated to finding the best fit for our pups and not all dogs will thrive in every home. We will do our best to be upfront about all issues or concerns and ask that our potential adopters and adopters do the same. We do not do third party adoptions, gifts, etc. as our adoption process is unique to the dog and the adopter. It would be silly to put a non-adopter through the adoption process and go to lengths to find a good match only for the dog not to end up with said match. We aren't trying to just place a dog for a bit, we are trying to find a pet their family for life. We expect the pets that are currently in the home are up to date on vet care at the time of the application. Small lapses are understandable, but more than a year without heartworm medication or testing for your dog will result in denial. Rabies vaccines are required by law and noncompliance will be immediate grounds for denial. Titers are accepted. Additionally, all dogs and/or cats in the home must be fixed or have a note of exemption from a veterinarian. Dogs come with challenges and require work. Sometimes, life happens and we have less time than we once did. We expect adopters to work with the dogs they have adopted from us to help them be the best dogs they can be and do their absolute best to keep their dogs for life. This may include seeking training, veterinary assistance, or other resources in order to give your dog the happiest and healthiest life possible. We are happy to work with you if something comes up, but please recognize we are just volunteers and cannot always work miracles. Make plans for who will take your dog in the event the unthinkable happens (and make sure to check with that person, taking on a new dog or more can be a lot to ask of someone) so no one is left trying to figure out what to do while under stress. We do not allow close in age or sibling adoptions. One year or more apart is preferred in order to alleviate behavioral concerns that come from adopting too closely together. We cannot adopt out dogs with plans to bypass rental or breed restrictions through ESA registry. This is unfortunately too unpredictable with changes in the law right now, but we will be happy to help you find a pup that fits the guidelines! We will contact personal references as well as your vet in order to be sure all information on your application is accurate and that there are no concerns. We will always verify your are the homeowner or contact your landlord if you do not own your home. If you live with someone, please confirm before applying that they are on board with welcoming a new furry friend home. Our application process is not meant to be overly intrusive or embarrassing, we just hope to put the foster dogs we come to love deeply into the best homes possible. We never rush the process since all of our dogs are already happy and safe waiting in our homes. We would rather place a dog one time even if it takes three months or a year versus placing a dog every two weeks in a different, less-than-ideal home. If you adopt from us, you will be welcomed into The Family. Well, maybe not the one that first came to mind, but the MAFIA Alumni Page is a wonderful resource and community to share Mispits and ask for advice. And we all really love dogs. So almost as good as that other one.

This would be uncommon, however, we have had instances where we have received reports about rehoming or abuse and have followed up to check in
If you apply for a puppy, there will normally be no trial period. We will gladly take the dog back, however, no refund will be offered as that fee has already been used to pay for the next dog. For unusual circumstances or adult dogs, we will offer a one or two week trial so that we can be sure it is a good fit for everyone.

Terms and Conditions

Thank you for considering pet adoption with us! Our mission is to ensure that every pet finds a loving and responsible home. By proceeding with the adoption process, you agree to the following terms and conditions, which are designed to ensure the well-being of our pets and clarify the responsibilities of all parties involved.

Eligibility for Adoption

Adopters must be 18 years of age or older and possess a valid government-issued ID. You must demonstrate the ability to provide a safe, loving, and stable environment for the pet. This includes securing consent from all living in the household and, if renting, proof of permission from the landlord to house a pet.

Adoption Process

The adoption process includes a comprehensive application, an interview with a shelter representative, and possibly a home visit. We reserve the right to deny any application based on our assessment of the pet's best interest.

Pet Care Commitment

By adopting a pet, you commit to providing it with necessary veterinary care, including regular check-ups, vaccinations, and emergency care. You agree to provide a nutritious diet, fresh water, adequate exercise, and a loving environment. The adopter is responsible for obedience training, ensuring the pet is well-behaved and socially adjusted.

Importance of Pet Insurance

We strongly recommend securing pet insurance for your new family member to help manage any unforeseen medical expenses that may arise. Pet insurance can provide peace of mind by covering costs related to accidents, illnesses, and even routine wellness checks, ensuring your pet receives the care they need without financial stress. Choosing the right insurance provider is an important decision, and we encourage you to research and select the best option for your pet's needs.

Return Policy

If you are unable to continue caring for the pet, you agree to return it to the shelter rather than abandoning it or surrendering it to another party or shelter. You understand that adoption fees are non-refundable except under specific circumstances determined by the shelter.

Non-transferability of Adoption

The adoption is non-transferable. You may not sell, give away, or otherwise rehome the pet without the express consent of the shelter, which retains the right of first refusal.

Liability Waiver

The adopter agrees to release, indemnify, and hold harmless the shelter and its affiliates from any and all claims, damages, costs, expenses, loss of services, actions, and causes of action arising out of any act or occurrence from the adopted pet's actions or behavior. You acknowledge that the shelter cannot guarantee the health, behavior, or temperament of the pet.

Data Privacy

Personal information collected during the adoption process is used solely for the purpose of ensuring a good match between the pet and adopter and will not be sold or shared with third parties, except as required by law.

Agreement to Contact

You agree to allow the shelter to contact you for follow-up purposes and to verify that the pet is well-cared for. This may include phone calls, emails, or home visits.

Amendment and Governing Law

These terms and conditions may be amended by the shelter at any time. The adoption and any disputes arising under it will be governed by the laws of the jurisdiction where the shelter is located.
