About

Piedmont Animal Welfare Alliance

The Piedmont Animal Welfare Alliance (PAW Alliance) is a volunteer-driven 503(c)(3) nonprofit in Forsyth County, NC focused on the intersection of animal welfare and social justice. Our mission is to make our community one where all pets and people have safe and loving homes. PAW Alliance is proud to offer two primary programs: A New Leash on Life and A New Start in Life. A New Leash on Life is a dog training program of the NC state prison system. PAW Alliance partners with the Forsyth Correctional Center, a minimum-security men’s prison and offers 10-week training sessions. Under the guidance of a professional dog trainer, inmates learn how to work with dogs and train them in basic obedience. Dogs trained in the program have extremely high adoption rates and the offender trainers are learning marketable skills they can use to find employment after release. The dogs for our program come from a local rescue group to help those dogs most in need of some extra skills before they find their forever home. A New Start in Life provides safety and care to pets of all varieties while survivors of interpersonal violence find safety. We provide loving foster homes or lodging, food and treats, medical care, toys, and all other needs, allowing the survivors to feel great relief knowing their pets are safe and loved. After they figure out their next steps and leave the shelter, survivors are reunited with their pets. We are always seeking available foster homes for this program and invite you to contact us for information on how you can get involved.
